Crash sends "hot" powerlines onto U.S. Highway 64 East

Traffic backs up as highway closed to traffic between Cashiers Ingles and Shell

By Don Richeson / Staff

U.S. Highway 64 East was closed to traffic between Cashiers Shell and the Ingles shopping center around 3:30 p.m. Thursday after a van apparently crashed into and snapped loose a large utility pole, which in turn caused “hot” electrical lines to fall across the highway. It was not immediately clear whether or not there were injuries in the crash.

Crews were on the scene working to remove the lines and restore power to several businesses that lost power as traffic backed up a half mile in both directions.

Be sure to pick up a copy of the Jan. 23 print edition of the Crossroads Chronicle for more on the crash.
