Jackson NAACP presenting “Slavery, Law and the Constitution: The Road to 1909"
SYLVA -- On Saturday, May 18, the Jackson County NAACP Branch will meet at 10 a.m. at Liberty Baptist Church at 551 Scott’s Creek Road in Sylva. At 11 a.m., L. Lynn Hogue, Ph.D., J.D., professor of law emeritus at Georgia State University College of Law, will present his program topic “Slavery, Law and the Constitution: The Road to 1909.”
The program this month is the first in a multi-part series that the Jackson County NAACP Branch is developing to create a deeper knowledge of the legal foundations and history of the civil rights movement.
“We are bringing in activists and scholars of history, political science and even philosophy to present segments. The series is called ‘Roots and Wings’ and is targeted for completion and formal offering to our members, our partners, and the general public in late summer 2019,” Cashiers resident and Jackson County NAACP spokesman Lucy Christopher said via email.
