Local, state voters opt for change

Voters on the plateau and across the Tar Heel State showed a dissatisfaction Tuesday with the status quo and a desire for change.

In Jackson County, residents ousted two incumbent Democratic commissioners -- District 4 Commissioner Mark Jones and District 3 Commissioner Vicki Greene. The Jackson County Board of Commissioners will now lean to the right in December, with three Republican representatives and two Democrats.

Districtwide, voters opted to unseat N.C. District 119 Representative Joe Sam Queen, D-Haywood. Mike Clampitt, R-Haywood, won 50.43 percent of the vote. There was a 301 vote difference between the two candidates. A recount is possible.

Barring a change from a recount, North Carolina will also see a new governor. When votes were counted, Attorney General Roy Cooper (D) defeated Gov. Pat McCrory (R) by 5,001 votes -- 48.97 percent to 48.86 percent.

In other races affecting North Carolina as a whole, Republican incumbents Patrick McHenry, Mark Meadows and Virginia Foxx all held their congressional seats, and U.S. Sen. Richard Burr (R) kept his seat -- defeating Deborah Ross (D). N.C. District 50 Sen. Jim Davis, R-Macon, also kept his seat, beating out Democratic challenger Jane Hipps.

Nationally, North Carolina joined many other battleground states in voting for Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump, who is set to take office in January.
