SAPPHIRE -- The public is invited to attend southern Jackson County’s 2017 community Veterans Day observance, which is presented through Jimmy Dillard Post 10685 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its auxiliary. This annual service honors all military veterans who served as members of the United States Armed Forces. The service is set for 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 and will be at the veterans memorial outside Mica’s restaurant at 25 Logan Lane, off U.S. Highway 64 West in Sapphire.

The featured speaker will be Dennis Ford of Glenville, who served as a U.S. Army staff sergeant in Vietnam in the Delta. He was wounded and evacuated to Japan to recover.

Ford also served in Korea on the DMZ. He was discharged in 1966 after serving three years. After completing his doctoral degree in Psychology, he taught and practiced in Australia. Ford has a deep and abiding interest in his fellow veterans and great love for his country.

VFW Post and Auxiliary members will also be distributing buddy poppies at the Ingles shopping center in Cashiers 10 a.m.-2 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 10. These poppies are free to anyone who will wear them in support of veterans and armed forces serving around the world.
