June 14, 1929 -March 10, 2018

Jack Dempsey, beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, 88, of Cashiers peacefully left this world on Saturday, March 10, 2018 surrounded by family.

He leaves his legacy through his wife of 66 years, Ginger; two sons, Jack Arthur Dempsey Jr. (Robyn) and Joseph Lyle Dempsey; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Michael L. Jamieson

Michael Jamieson, a longtime resident of Florida, died Thursday, Feb. 22 at his Cashiers home. He was 78 years old.

Marie Teague Cranston, 87, a former resident of Augusta, Georgia, died at Chestnut Hill in Highlands after a brief illness.

The graveside service was at Summerville Cemetery in Augusta, Georgia on Saturday, February 3 at 10  a.m. Officiating clergy included her son-in-law, the Rev. Michael H. Cleckler from All Saints Episcopal Church in Homewood, Alabama.

William Theodore Gary III passed away on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018 after a brief illness.

He was predeceased by his father, William Theodore Gary Jr.; his mother, Irene von Kamp Gary; his brother, Albert von Kamp Gary; and his sister, Maude Gary Doris.

Betty Jo Hooper passed away peacefully on Jan. 13, 2018.

She was born Dec. 31, 1931 in Glenville to the late Henry Hayes Hooper and Julia Bryson Hooper.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Duane, Brownlow and Wendell Hooper; and one half-sister, Bessie Cecil Parker.

Susan Kay Loda, 79, of Traverse City, Michigan died Monday, Jan. 22, 2018 at Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City.

She was born on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1941 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

She was the daughter of Robert and Lois (Rohde) Crabb and stepfather, G. Don Ellis.

John L. “Jack” Tyrer of Fort Myers, Florida, and Cashiers passed away Jan. 24, 2018, at age 90.

He was born in Brockton, Massachusetts to the late Dorothy and Lloyd P. Tyrer, and grew up in nearby West Bridgewater.

John Clark Moore Jr., 98, passed away in peace from natural causes late on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, at home and surrounded by loved ones.

He was a twin, born on Aug. 7, 1919, in Washington, D.C., to Col. John Moore and Alberta Preston Moore.

Richard Lee Ramey Sr. died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018 in Highlands.


He was born Aug. 6, 1935 in Danville, Virginia, the son of the late Robert Home and Helen Tesh Ramey.

After graduating from North Carolina State College with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mr. Ramey was employed by Duke Power Company for 35 years until his retirement in 1992.

Laban Tyson Betty, 98, of Asheville, died peacefully at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community on Jan. 13, 2018.

Born in Montgomery, Alabama, he was the son of Lee Irby and Anne Tyson Betty.

He was a graduate of Duke University and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy in World War II.

Melanie Brown Ting of Raleigh passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018 after a valiant battle with breast cancer.

She was born in Wilson to the late Morris C. Brown Sr. and Carolyn D. Brown.

Frances James Kirven

Frances James Kirven, 74, of Cashiers, North Carolina passed away on Monday, Jan. 1, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was raised in Mount Airy and was the daughter of the late Walter Scherer James and Frances Foy James.

Dean Lowell Meggison

Dean Lowell (Meg) Meggison, of Sapphire, formerly of Kennebunk, Maine, passed away unexpectedly on the first day of winter, Thursday, Dec. 21, 2017, at the age of 70.

He was born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 9, 1947, the son of Clifford and Jean Meggison, and brother of Keith Meggison and Martha Barker.

Sandra “Sandy” Kaye Rogers Talley

Sandra “Sandy” Kaye Rogers Talley, of Walhalla South Carolina, died peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017 at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, after courageously fighting pancreatic cancer for more than three years. She was 74 years old.

William A. "Bill" Whiteside

William A. "Bill" Whiteside, 92, of Cashiers passed away early Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017.

There was a graveside service Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 3 p.m. at Upper Zachary Cemetery in Cashiers with the Rev. Steve Kerhoulas officiating. A community celebration of life will be conducted at a later date.
