Laban Tyson Betty, 98, of Asheville, died peacefully at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community on Jan. 13, 2018.

Born in Montgomery, Alabama, he was the son of Lee Irby and Anne Tyson Betty.

He was a graduate of Duke University and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy in World War II.

Melanie Brown Ting of Raleigh passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018 after a valiant battle with breast cancer.

She was born in Wilson to the late Morris C. Brown Sr. and Carolyn D. Brown.

Frances James Kirven

Frances James Kirven, 74, of Cashiers, North Carolina passed away on Monday, Jan. 1, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was raised in Mount Airy and was the daughter of the late Walter Scherer James and Frances Foy James.

Dean Lowell Meggison

Dean Lowell (Meg) Meggison, of Sapphire, formerly of Kennebunk, Maine, passed away unexpectedly on the first day of winter, Thursday, Dec. 21, 2017, at the age of 70.

He was born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 9, 1947, the son of Clifford and Jean Meggison, and brother of Keith Meggison and Martha Barker.

Sandra “Sandy” Kaye Rogers Talley

Sandra “Sandy” Kaye Rogers Talley, of Walhalla South Carolina, died peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017 at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, after courageously fighting pancreatic cancer for more than three years. She was 74 years old.

William A. "Bill" Whiteside

William A. "Bill" Whiteside, 92, of Cashiers passed away early Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017.

There was a graveside service Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 3 p.m. at Upper Zachary Cemetery in Cashiers with the Rev. Steve Kerhoulas officiating. A community celebration of life will be conducted at a later date.

Audrey J. Tritt

Audrey J. Tritt, 81, of Sylva died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017, surrounded by family at Skyland Care Center.

Audrey Tritt was a Sylva native who was born on April 10, 1936.

She was the daughter of the late Walter and Wilma Jones.

Dr. Charles T. Ellis

Dr. Charles T. Ellis, 92, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017 due to congestive heart failure.

He was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

He was the grandson of O.M. Ellis and R.N. McWilliams, North Delta pioneers.

Tina Elizabeth Bradley Corbin

Tina Elizabeth Bradley was born Sept. 19, 1930 in Cashiers Valley where she grew up, married her sweetheart, Alvin Grant, and gave birth to three children, James Edward Grant of Cashiers, Katherine Grant Roberts (deceased), and Sandra Grant Crowe of Waynesville.

Stanley Ross Baumgarner

Stanley Ross Baumgarner, 61, of Mountain Rest, South Carolina passed away Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017 at The Cottingham House in Seneca, South Carolina, after a tough battle with cancer.

Carol Florence Hall

Carol Florence Hall, 80, of Glenville, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017.

She owned and operated Carols Flowers in Cashiers.

Born in Guilford County, she was the daughter of the late George Florence and Nellie Bennett Florence.

Berlin Cecil Middleton

Berlin Cecil Middleton, 71, of Tuckasegee, went home to be with The Lord, Friday afternoon Oct. 27, 2017.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Cecil and Alda Brown Middleton.

Mack Ernest Holland

Mack Ernest Holland, 74, of Cullowhee passed away Friday, Oct. 13, 2017.

The funeral is planned for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Yellow Mountain Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Ashe, the Rev. Nathan Moss and the Rev. Johnny Norris officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

William Lee Rogers Sr.

William Lee Rogers Sr., 74, of Franklin, passed away on Monday, Oct. 9, 2017.

Born in Jackson County, he was the son of the late Virgle and Mary Buchanan Rogers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl and Alex Rogers.

Dodgen Kendall Few

Dodgen Kendall Few was born July 25, 1997 in Brevard and died Friday, Sept. 29, 2017 in Greenville, South Carolina.

He was loved by many and will be greatly missed. He lit up a room with his light and laughter. He loved his girlfriend, Lauren Lipscomb, and his family, with all his heart.
