Charles Scooter Chrestman

CASHIERS -- Charles "Scooter" Chrestman, 61, died Monday, April 17, 2017 in Cairo, Illinois.

He leaves his wife, Linda Chrestman; his daughter, Betty Chrestman; his son, Matthew Chrestman; four grandchildren; his father, Gene Chrestman; and sister, Debbie Willis of Cairo, Illinois; nieces in Illinois; and many friends in both states.

Scooter was raised in Cairo, Illinois and preceded in death by his mother, Carolyn Chrestman.

Michael Terry Pyle

May 20, 1938-April 9, 2017

Michael Terry Pyle, of Sapphire, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2017 of cancer complications. Beloved by his numerous family and friends, his charisma, charm, compassion, wisdom and positive demeanor will be missed by so many. He had a larger than life personality, which will never be duplicated. May he rest in peace.

Ann Aiken Jennings

Ann Aiken Jennings, 62, of Cashiers passed away Monday, April 3, 2017 at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.  Mrs. Jennings was born April 9, 1954 in Brevard and was married to Hayse Jennings for 48 years. She was the daughter of the late J.D. Aiken and the late Jackie Snipes.

She was a homemaker and a member of Cashiers Baptist Church. She loved to work in her flowers and was devoted to her boys, her grandchildren and loved “that darn cat” Midnight.   

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by one brother; Glenn Snipes.

Juan Hernandez

Juan Hernandez, 53, of Cashiers, passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2017. Born in Harlingen, Texas, he was the son of Guadalupe C. Hernandez of Illinois and the late Anastacio Hernandez Sr.

Mr. Hernandez loved his family and was passionate about helping people in any way he could. He volunteered for many community events and projects. He loved fishing and NASCAR and loved spending time with his grandsons.

Emma Henson Fisher

Emma Henson Fisher, 91, of Glenville, passed away peacefully with her family by her side Friday, March 17, 2017.

A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Ola Henson. She was a cherished member of Glenville Wesleyan Church, where she was devoted to her church and church family.

She was also a very devoted mother to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

With her husband, she operated Fishers Grocery.

She was a former member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Glenville Cashiers Rescue Auxiliary.

Geraldine Frances Drinkwater

Geraldine Frances Drinkwater, 92, of Cullowhee, passed away Monday, March 13, 2017.

Born in Excelsior Springs, Montana, she was the daughter of the late V. Lewis Drew and Gladys Lucille Rouse Drew. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Milligan. Geraldine enjoyed painting and wood carving. She was a member of Christ Church of the Valley in Cashiers.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Earl Keith Drinkwater, and one son, Scott Anthony Shannon of Franklin.

Patricia Anne Dillon

Patricia Anne Dillon, 90, formerly of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully in her sleep, Feb. 23, 2017.

She has lived in Cashiers for 23 years. The last 7 years was as a resident of Highlands-Cashiers Eckerd Living Center.

Pat always had a smile for everyone, loved to play Trivia, at which she was very good. Pat also loved to be outside in the sun.

Tommy Allan Valenta passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017 at CHI St. Lukes Health in Houston, Texas, after a long battle with cancer. He was 67 years old.

Tommy was a man with a strong can-do spirit and the epitome of a true Texan. He was born March 4, 1949 in Houston, Texas. When he was 6 years old, Tommy’s parents, Lody Valenta and Margaret Helen Hassell, moved their family to Wichita Falls. 

Mrs. Barbaranne Hicks, 90, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2017 at her home after an extended illness. She was the daughter of Jerome Y. Trigg and Tennie W. Higgison of Mississippi, and was preceded in death by her brother Jerry Trigg and her husband Ralph L. Hicks. She lived in the Cashiers and Sapphire Valley area of North Carolina for 36 years. 

Asheville --  Jim Johnson, 70

Jim Johnson was born in Watertown, South Dakota. He is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Resa Falk Johnson, children Tara and Josh Kornblum, Gabrielle and David Johnson and Arik Johnson. Jim is also survived by his grandchildren, Caleb and Noa Johnson; his mother, Irma Opheim Johnson; his sister, Barbara Rapchak; and eight nieces and nephews. 

Sapphire – William Thomas Sculley, 78, passed away Monday, Feb. 13, 2017. 

He was the son of the late Harold and Elizabeth Rohmann Sculley. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Sculley. 

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ann Sculley; son, Jim Sculley and wife Jeanmarie of Marietta, Georgia; daughters, Eileen Manley and husband Larry of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee and Susan Clark and husband Michael of Cedar Park, Texas; and grandchildren, Taylor and Lauren, Caroline, Ryan and Michael. 

A private family service will be conducted.

Thomas Burke McKinney, 69 of Cashiers, North Carolina passed away Jan. 31.

Born May 17, 1947 in Birmingham, AL, he was the son of the late Thomas L. and Jeannette A. McKinney.

Burke spent his formative years in Augusta, Georgia, where he attended Richmond Academy, worked for his father at Augusta Coca-Cola Bottling Co., played lots of golf and loved working at the Augusta National Golf Club in the spring, serving Cokes and pimento cheese sandwiches to the patrons.

Peggy L. Rowbottom, 84, of Cashiers, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 7.

 Born in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Clay Price and Phoebe Evitt Price.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Rowbottom. Peggy was a member of Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. She enjoyed working in her yard.

 She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Bumgarner of Lake Toxaway, North Carolina; her son, Thad Buchanan (Melissa) of Prineville, Oregon; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and extended family, Carl and Brenda Stewart and family.

Marshall Carr Ferrell, Jr., age 90, a summer resident of Glenville, North Carolina passed away at his home in Tampa, Florida on January 23, 2017.  He had been in poor health for many years.

Marshall and his family built their home in Big Ridge Subdivision in 1972 and enjoyed being there during the summer months. They enjoyed their view of the mountains, but enjoyed their neighbors even more.

Dr. Jonathan Richard Williams, son of Dr. J. Richard Williams and Annie Laurie Beckham Williams, died Jan. 23. He was born in Selma, Alabama, Sept. 8, 1939.  

He graduated from Albert Parrish High School and Princeton University. He received his doctorate and master’s degree in biochemistry and Thesis of the Year Award from Tulane Medical School. After medical school, he did his internship and first year residency at The University of Missouri Medical Center.
