Alan Richard Monteith
Alan Richard Monteith, 67, of Cashiers, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 14.
Born Jan. 6, 1949 in Jackson County, he was the son of the late Thomas Richard and Mattie B. Monteith. He was a self-employed general contractor who was an avid outdoorsman.
Mr. Monteith was a champion for Mexican rights. He attended the Patterson School for boys in Lenoir, where he was a scholar and outstanding athlete, but will mostly be remembered for being a loving father, grandfather and husband who will be missed. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, James Monteith.
He is survived by his wife Balbina Monteith of the home; four sons: Bryan Monteith (Megan) of Hillsborough; Derick Monteith of Liberty, South Carolina; Jovani Sanchez of Cashiers; and Luis Sanchez of Cashiers; one daughter, Becky Stegner (Jon) of Graham; four grandchildren, Abigail, Aidan, Annabelle and Bailey; three sisters, Patricia Drummond, Myra Bumgarner and Lisa Monteith; one brother, Phil Monteith; and stepmother Katherine Monteith. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17 at Cashiers United Methodist Church, of which he was a member. The family received friends prior to the service at the church.
