Betty Beck Bishop
Betty Beck Bishop passed away peacefully on June 1 after an extended illness.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, William Stewart Bishop Sr.; two sons, Michael (Sheila) Bishop of Orlando, Florida, and William Stewart (Frances) Bishop Jr. of Hillsborough; four grandchildren, Chris, Carson, Amber Bishop and Linden McDonald; and two great grandchildren.
Her parents, Herman and Nancie Beck of Alabama, brothers Chris and August Beck and sister Virginia Hamilton preceded her in death. Betty and Stewart lived in Kinston until retirement in the early 1980s when they moved into their dream home in Cashiers. They both had a large part in the planning and building of their home. Betty planned and built the stone chimney in their living room.
Throughout her life, Betty was active in her church in youth programs, mission work and other ministries. In the later years, when unable to travel, she baked cookies for the travelers.
She mastered many crafts — painting, cake decorating, stained glass, basketry, quilting, pine cone wreaths, tailoring. She also taught various crafts to children and at nursing homes.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 16 at Cashiers United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Betty Beck Bishop Memorial Fund at Cashiers United Methodist Church, PO Box 162, Cashiers, NC 28717.
