Richard C. (Dick) Rust
Richard C. (Dick) Rust died Monday, Sept. 23, 2019.
The son of the late Philip G. Rust and Eleanor Francis Rust, he was born in Wilmington, Delaware on April 15, 1940, and grew up in Thomasville, Ga.
He graduated from Williams College, received a master’s degree from Yale University, and taught in the art department at the University of Georgia in Athens.
He was primarily a painter, drawer and printmaker.
He and his former wife raised their daughters in Hartwell, Ga. and England.
His parents bought property in Whiteside Cove in 1946.
Dick Rust loved the mountains and streams of western North Carolina when he first saw them as a child and was fortunate to be able to retire to the cove in the 1990s.
He is survived by his brothers, Francis G. Rust and wife, Angela, and Henry Rust and wife, Joan.
His oldest brother, Philip G. Rust Jr., predeceased him.
His daughters, Pim Rust, Anissa Rust and Vina Rust, as well as his wife, Amy Chase, also survive. The extended Rust family, including his nieces, Jenny Carothers and her family, Sindi Westberg and her family, Missy Rust and her family, and Tabitha Bradley and her family, who have all visited and stayed in Whiteside Cove over the past 70 years, survive as well.
Burial will be private at the family cemetery in Wilmington.
