William (Bill) Leonard
William (Bill) Leonard, born July 2, 1927, was received into Heaven on Sept 6.
Born in Bryn Athyn Pennsylvania, he and his wife Dorothy Price Leonard moved to Balsam Grove in 1952. He was a great land surveyor, working on projects like The Wolf Lake Dam. He loved people.
Later they moved to Brevard, where they lived for many years and adopted six children: Becky, Kathy, Cindy, Tobi, Wendy and Timothy (Butch).
Bill served in the Navy during the Korean War and also served as a state representative in the mid 60s. But surveying was his true love in work. He surveyed High Hampton for W.D. McKee, and found great friendship with him. He could tell you almost every inch of these mountains in the greater Cashiers area.
His greatest love was of God, and it showed through his kindness and honesty. He worked in Nigeria for three years, and then went on to do mission work in Honduras and Guatemala, where he adopted a family of four children who had lost their parents — Natalyi, Paublo, Sonia and Maria Paguada. He bought them a small coffee farm where they could live and be self-sufficient, and they are doing well.
Bill attended Christ Church of the Valley in Cashiers and loved pastor Steve Kerhoulas and the church family there.
He lived out his last years at the Fedelia Eckerd Living Center and cared deeply for all the staff. In leiu of flowers, he asked that you would send chocolate kisses and hugs to the staff at the Fedelia Eckard Living Center, 190 Hospital Drive, Highlands, NC 28741; or make a donation to the building fund to Christ Church of the Valley, P.O. Box 2863, Cashiers, NC 28717; or the biggest gift, sponsor a child through Compassion International.
Bill will be greatly missed, but his love lives on, and his stories will not be forgotten.
