CASHIERS -- Blue Ridge Early College’s girls basketball Coach Tim Mayse is optimistic about his young but quick team. “I think the season is going to go well,” Mayse, in his fourth year coaching the Bobcat girls, said.

The team finished second overall in the Little Smoky Mountain Conference last year and had a 7-17 overall, 3-3 conference record.

“We’re young this year. We have four freshman on our roster, have zero seniors and have one sophomore and three juniors,” he said. “We shoot the ball well -- it’s just a matter of controlling the ball possession and growing as a team.”

He said the team’s strengths were quickness, ability to attack the basket and shooting. He said though its lack of game experience at the varsity level could be a challenge.

While he hestitated singling out players to watch, he said he had high hopes for his two returning starters -- Kaitlyn Stewart and Jade Bryson -- whom he said will provide leadership. “Kaitlyn is a great defensive player with good instincts and awareness of where the ball is going,” he said. “Jade is a good shooter. This is her third year on varsity so she has experience in pressure situations.”

He added that he was also excited about the freshman girls on his roster. “I think they’re going to do great things in the future,” he said. “I’m also excited overall who is on our team this year. We’re gelling as a team. We have good morale.”
